This book, filled with rare nostalgic photos and informative prose, covers the lifetime of California's fascinating narrow gauge North Pacific Coast railroad and its paddlewheel ferry line which once upon a time carried thousands of San Franciscans north across the bay to Marin and Sonoma counties. The rail line linked Sausalito, San Rafael, Mill Valley, and ultimately reached the glorious Russian River "vacationland" country so famous for its redwoods.
Beginning in 1876, the railroad brought millions of board feet of redwood lumber from the virgin forests and thousands of carloads of farm products to a bustling San Francisco. The narrow-gauge route was perhaps the most scenic of any in the country. It wound through miles of unmatched redwood forests which blocked out the sun overhead; it forged through the mountains by means of marvelous tunnels, and it was pelted by the salt spray of the rugged sea coast.
The North Pacific Coast Railroad was no "dinky" narrow gauge. It boasted well-maintained equipment of the latest style, from speedy paddlewheel ferries to the largest narrow-gauge steam locomotive of the time. It ran excellent commuter service; it advertised the finest hunting and fishing areas along its tracks, and it made available to the residents of the Bay Area the finest of resorts throughout the 1890's and early 1900's.
Yet, this well-researched history - done by an expert - will show the reader an almost endless parade of train wrecks, boat accidents and other excitements which make the book read like an imaginative novel!
Here is the whole story of the North Pacific Coast Railroad, which became the North Shore and was partially electrified, and was later a part of the Northwestern Pacific - the story of the building of it, the areas and peoples served, the locomotives and cars, the ferry boats and the car ferries, the grand hullaballoo and the gradual decline, and finally the end of the line.
