Foreword
In his presentation to the Interstate Commerce Commission of the history of The Colorado and Southern Railway and its family, Mr. T. S. McMurray stated, "The history of the Railway Systems of Colorado is very closely identified with the history of the State itself . . ." He might well have said, "The history of The Colorado and Southern is the history of the front range region of Colorado."
From the establishment of the Apex Wagon Road in 1867 to the development of the modern transportation system that is now The Colorado and Southern Railway, the railroad and the front range area have grown together. Each of the many cities and towns along the line owe much of their development to the industries that followed the rails as they replaced those wagon roads. By 1872 it became evident that the Gold regions of Black Hawk, Central City, Idaho Springs and Georgetown, in order to grow had to have supplies, including coal and machinery, that could best be moved by rail. The adventures and dreams of those great planners and wild adventurers, and sometimes crooks, who worked together are the tale of the "coming of age" of the people, the cities and the railroad that makes this a great story.
Here, the author of this edition of the Colorado Rail Annual has put forward a wonderful summary of some of these tales and facts that so beautifully portray the great adventure that is the story of The Colorado and Southern Railway Company in this, the centennial year of its pioneer narrow gauge line.
