ON THE BACK COVER:
NARROW GAUGE INTO THE EIGHTIES G. T. Heavyside
Narrow gauge railways are now firmly part of the steam scene in Britain, and as tourist and holiday attractions carry more passengers than ever they did in their earlier heydays. In some places new lines have even sprung up where none existed before.
This book looks at narrow gauge railways of 15in gauge and upwards in the British Isles at the opening of the 1980s, tracing in words and pictures their development in the last 30 years since the formation of the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society in 1950, which sowed the seeds of railway preservation. A general introduction, giving a glimpse of the early history of narrow gauge railways, is followed by sections covering England, Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Man, and Ireland, with a narrative describing the background of each area, and accompanied by maps showing the locations of lines and centres. The album of more than 140 photographs compiled from the work of leading railway photographers, including the author, shows the many established lines, others located in private gardens, and numerous lines which only began life during the past 20 years.
More than 280 narrow gauge steam engines can be found in the British Isles, and the illustrations range widely, portraying some over 100 years old and others built as recently as the 1970s; they make a fascinating contrast to the larger standard gauge locomotives depicted in the author's complementary volume Steaming into the Eighties.
