All the well known small gauge Kent lines are featured in this album, along with an extensive selection of less famous routes serving the diverse industries of the county; also included are some military establishments and a wide assortment of holiday locations. They have been chosen to represent the different uses to which light railways have been put over the last 100 years or more, in this interesting corner of England.
The classic Industrial Railways of the South-East (IRSE) contains illustrations of some lines not included herein, notably those of the Alpha Cement Company at Cliffe-at-Hoo, APCM at Northfleet, BSC at Rainham, Erith Loam Quarries, Lower Halston Brickworks, RPCM at Halling and the Swanscombe Cement Works. Colliery systems are also excluded.
Some of the military lines not featured in this volume were either short lived or subject to strict security. In the former category was a two-foot gauge construction railway on Manston Airfield for the RAF and in the latter was an Admiralty line on Hoo Ness and an Army network at No. 4 Storehouse RE, Ashford. There were many others.
Railways for leisure and pleasure have been remarkably numerous in the "Garden of England" and so only a representive selection can be offered. Again, some have been transitory. Some of the memorable ones being the Bridgehill & Beechwood Railway, the Folkestone Miniature Railway, Herne Bay Miniature Railway and the Saltwood Miniature Railway. We have only included one example of a line under l5ns gauge.
The terms "tramway" and "railway" were used loosely, especially on piers and even in the legal world, and so, in some cases, we have had to cross the blurred boundary.
While the Midlands had the Black Country, Dr. Edwin Course described parts of North Kent as once being known as the White Country, due to the impact of the unregulated cement industry. This area was once paradise for the student of industrial lines. Kent's geographical location and features made it a home for a diverse selection of military railways. Its coastline gave rise to many minor rail routes for the benefit of holiday visitors. We hope that you will enjoy our selection.
