N scale will only be considered complete when steam locomotives are as frequently used as in other scales. The purpose of this book is to dispel any belief that only diesel locos run well in N scale. The experiences of many modelers are offered to guide you in selecting good running steam locos and to help you improve both how they look and how they run.
This book is not a comprehensive compendium of N steam modeling as there have been many other successful approaches. It is a cross section of experiences by those modelers willing to share what they have accomplished. You may not want to duplicate their model, but each article will probably have an idea you can use in your modeling.
We hope you will use this book to expand your enjoyment of N scale steam modeling. Perhaps it will also encourage you to share your successes with us by writing an article for us or the model railroading magazines. This book is revised frequently to keep it up to date with the introduction of new N scale models. The page numbering system reduces the chore of keeping the Index correct and of adjusting page layouts to accommodate added material. A page number of  "5.7" means that you are in Chapter 5 and on the seventh page in that chapter. There are several single pages with photo stories of steam engines. These are unnumbered and are used to adjust for material added to that chapter.
