LIKE MY EARLIER STUDY of John C. Calhoun, this biography of Bernard Mannes Baruch is also a portrait of America.
The story of Calhoun began with the birth of our republic and ended with the testing of that republic in the fires of civil war. The story of Bernard Baruch begins in the aftermath of that war and stretches into the shadow of the Atomic Age. Both eras are sides of the same coin. Calhoun's was the cause that was lost and Baruch's is the cause that has won. The transformation of the United States from an agrarian republic to an industrial democracy can be told through the lives of these two South Carolinians.
