Like all successful commercial enterprises, the   Union Pacific Railroad has always sought to improve its service, its equipment and its operations. Such changes, especially on a far-flung system which has every type of assignment and heavy grades on all sections, required faith in the future and large sums of money. Convinced of the necessity, the System has spent millions in the last decade on motive power alone. As a result of these large expenditures, the average age of all UP units is far above the median for the industry and the horsepower per unit is among the highest of all Class I carriers.
Because the Steam Era on the System did not end (for practical purposes) until 1959, the UP was not among the first large railroads in the United States to be completely dieselized. This fact did not mean that the UP was prejudiced or ultra-conservative. Rather it was probably a matter of circumstances and economics. With a large fleet of fairly new steam road power (Big Boys, 800's, Challengers) it would have been expensive to scrap them before they were fully depreciated and replace them with diesels.
Since 1958 there have been numerous additions and subtractions to the System's fleet because of this dynamic policy of improvement. Consequently the authors felt that a completely revised up-to-date edition containing much of the original edition hut also everything new would be useful and welcomed. Therefore this edition has the best of the Century of Steam (1858-1958) as well as the Diesel-Turbine Decades. Every type of steam locomotive is covered as well as complete chapters on all the turbines and the three classes of diesels - passenger, freight and yard. In addition to complete photo coverage, there are over eleven thousand words of information for the reader. No effort has been spared in preparing this complete and accurate story of the System's motive power from General Sherman (number 1) to the GE unit model U28c (numbered 2807) delivered on September 11, 1966.
Obviously such a work as this must have the cooperation and understanding of the officials of the UP in general and of the Motive Power Department in particular. The employees in the Public Relations, Valuation and the Motive Power Departments have given freely of their time and knowledge to ensure the correctness and completeness of this revision. The authors are very much aware of this splendid attitude and most appreciative for it.
