Introduction
Moody's Railroad Manual is the most comprehensive reference book on railroads available to the investor.
Full statistics showing financial and operating results are given, together with historical data, location and mileage, management and security descriptions. As an aid in comparing results of one road with another, the principal earnings and capital items are given for the last ten years on a per mile basis.
Attention is called to the analytical comments on operations and finances of each of the larger railroads including comparison of operating revenues with U. S. industrial production, also in relation to results of other roads in the same region as well as all Class 1 railroads.
Freight traffic statistics are classified for the full ten-year period on the basis of tonnage, carloadings and revenue with group percentages shown in each case. Similar comparisons are shown for principal commodities on a six-year basis. Seasonal trends of freight and passenger revenue, total operating revenue and net railway operating income by months are shown for a period of ten years with 10-year monthly average and monthly percentage of yearly total. Other features in the company statements include a tabulation of efficiency factors, analysis of expenditures for maintenance of equipment, balance sheet property account analysis, uniform classification of securities owned and tabulation of guaranties and suretyships.
Care has been used in presenting details of reorganization plans to enable the user to get the essential facts quickly and conveniently. Full descriptions of proposed new securities together with basis of exchange are given and where an ICC plan is pending, the treatment proposed for each outstanding security issue is also shown in the description thereof.
The "Analytical Survey of the Railroads" on blue insert in center of Manual contains much data, both statistical and analytical, of value in studying trends in the railway industry.
