ON THE BACK COVER
The Montana Railroad, succeeded by the Milwaukee Railroad, served central Montana for nearly a century, was one of the few railroads that operated with all three forms of power: steam, electric and diesel. It connected with the Great Northern Railway at Lewistown, and the Northern Pacific at Lombard.
Nicknamed the Jawbone, because suppliers were "jawboned" for credit, the line had a difficult birth, many years of tenuous existence, some years of relative prosperity, and then a long, slow, lingering decline and demise. It operated in mountainous terrain, in a part of the country where winter weather can be brutally harsh. That it survived for almost a century seems, in retrospect, almost a miracle.
This is the story of that railroad.
