An enduring love affair with steam trains amongst British modellers and enthusiasts ensured that for many years any modelling activity involving diesel or electric traction was dismissed almost derisively as 'modern image' and modellers and manufacturers tended to concentrate on reproducing the nostalgic era when steam trains reigned supreme. There have always been modellers attracted by the rail activity they see around them, however; it was usually the case in steam days. as it happens, but now, after some years when modern British Rail was not widely modelled, there are signs of greatly increased interest, probably because there is now a whole generation of young modellers who do not remember any other trains than those they see in BR blue and grey which is the period covered by this book. Manufacturers are realising the interest too, and there is an ever increasing output of good ready-to-run models. For the modeller with only limited time, skill or money. or any combination of these, modelling modern BR has much to commend itself. First of all the real thing can easily be seen in action and experienced at first hand, and on
the spot research is possible. Many operations arc greatly simplified today. which can be reflected in fairly simple track layouts (even single track main lines are possible) and quite short trains if the right sort of working is chosen. All of this is good news for modellers with limited space. Then. again. it is all getting very colourful, more so as time goes on, and it is pleasing to get away from the drab greys. browns, and blacks which have predominated in the past. There is plenty to challenge the interest and imagination, indeed the subject is larger than can be incorporated even in this generously illustrated book.
Therefore I have concentrated on matters which the average modeller can pursue. Thus
there is no great coverage of Southern Region electric trains, not because they are not interesting but because at the time of writing there is little available for modellers who depend on ready-to-run and conversions for most of their activity. No doubt the gaps in model coverage will be filled as time goes on. but this book has concentrated on what can be done with material to hand at the time of writing.
There are not many layout samples given in this book because most existing 'steam age' published track plans can be used, suitably simplified and personal research will suggest ideas and features which can be incorporated into a modern layout. For those who want something definite to copy. however, I have included a personal favourite. Coombe Junction, which reflects a lot of the character of modernised BR including a simple track layout. This layout could be built along one wall, so assisting those who do not have much space at their disposal. Similarly I have omitted a section on road transport because most of the firms making model cars and commercial vehicles offer a good selection of current or recent types and finding these is the least of your problems  they can be purchased in most model and toy shops. Checking that they are to the correct scale is the main requirement as many of these items come in random sizes. which are far removed from the recognised model railway scales.
