THIS IS A GUIDEBOOK and, as such, its intention is only to provide suggestions for the modeling of a unique mountain pass, the railroads it has agreed to tolerate, and the scenic grandeur it commands.
That this is also an open love affair for your author, from its majestic mountains to the Santa Fe Railway, is an admission better made at the start as I will always stand in awe of both Cajon Pass and the railroad that is its senior tenant. Yet this is also a book for those with an interest in the Union Pacific and, more recently, the Southern Pacific Railroads for they too share this uncompromising stretch of real estate the early Spanish explorers appropriately christened Cajon (Ka-HONE), the "box."
Stories abound in this pass and a brief look at how it all came about will help establish an atmosphere and flavor so prevalent to the land.
Cajon Pass, "the Big Hill of Southern California," is the gateway for both the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway and, by trackage rights, the Union Pacific Railroad to the populous Southern California coast. It is the vital access from the Mojave Desert located to the east, to the city of San Bernardino lying 2,500 feet below and 50 miles southwest in the heart of California's grove belt, and Los Angeles 60 miles beyond.
