COMPARED with other European countries, the pace of railway electrification in Britain has been slow. Only 23% of British Rail's network is electrified compared with 33% in France and 40% in West Germany. (Incidentally, 83% of French Railways' traffic is moved by electric traction.) However, in the past two years the British outlook has improved considerably. After a period of uncertainty between December 1981 and March 1983, no less than 13 BR projects have been approved by the Department of Transport. With the 14 projects now in hand (see Table 1), within five years BR will extend electric working to a further 583 miles of route, at a total cost exceeding million. Assuming the extent of the network is not reduced, by 1991 the percentage of route-mileage electrified will rise to 29%.
