INTRODUCTION
I know you are going to enjoy this newly revised and enlarged edition of the up-to-the-minute book that has guided hundreds of thousands of people to the pleasures of model railroading.
In my fifty-eight years of building miniature electric trains I have never discovered a more fascinating hobby.
When I started the manufacture of electric trains 58 years ago, miniature trains had very little resemblance to the beautifully scale-detailed models we manufacture today. In the intervening years tremendous progress has been made. Today the model railroad enthusiast, with the equipment now available, can construct and operate the most modern railroad system-controlling and directing his trains by the magic of electronic remote control.
Now you can enjoy the thrill of sitting at the control throttles of your model set-complete master of a miniature railroad system that performs all the functions of a real one. By remote control you can blow the whistle of your locomotive, increase or decrease its speed, stop and reverse it-you can "make up" trains, guide them through intricate switching systems, sidings and spurs, load and unload cars, operate roadside equipment. You become, at one time, engineer, brakeman, conductor, yardmaster, dispatcher, as well as owner and general manager.
Naturally you'll want to match the realism of your model outfit with a fitting background, scenic surroundings as lifelike as the perfection Of the trains themselves. You will spend many a pleasant hour, planning and building a little world of your own with its villages, mountains, prairies, rivers, all linked together, as our country is, by the vital network of railroads.
The fascination of model railroading-the urge to build and operate a miniature railroad systemis typically American. Each individual has the opportunity to inject his own personality into his work, to create a railroad system unlike any other one in the world.
To those of you who are joining us, and those who are already members of our fraternity of model railroad fans, I wish the very best of luck, and at least some measure of the happiness I have had in my 58 years as a builder of model electric trains.
