Three-Position Signal
A Semaphore Which Automatically Throws to All Indications.
BY FRANK TAYLOR.
[This is another project worked out in the experimental department of this magazine. We are continually striving to originate new ideas that will make the hobby more interesting to you. Suggestions for future projects will be appreciated.-Editor.]
THE somewhat outmoded semaphore blade used for block and interlocking signals has one or two outstanding features that adapt it to model railroad practice. To know what the signal indication is without having to look at the face of it is very desirable and in addition the motion of the blades is something a person enjoys watching.
As the majority of the installations in recent years have been of the three-position upper quadrant type, one of the most typical is modeled. The big bugaboo in modeling this type of signal has been to get the blade to function in three positions. When the blade is normally vertical the indication is clear, when the blade is at an upward angle of 45the indication is proceed prepared to stop at next signal, and when the blade is horizontal the indication is stop. To have the blade behave in a railroadlike manner two solenoids are arranged to supply the necessary impetus to the blade at the proper time. In addition, three lenses-red, yellow and green -are installed in the positions shown. These are illuminated in turn as the blade indicates, by means of a beam of light which is projected upward from below the table. This method of illumination allows the signal to be built to scale and works out nicely.
A study of the drawings and sketches will acquaint you with the different parts and their duties. Note that the signal can be removed without disturbing the assembly beneath the table and vice versa. A counterweight is placed on the upper rod to allow the blade to return to normal after the solenoids are de-energized.
