How Railroads Work
THE RIGHTS OF TRAINS
ANY regularly scheduled train has right to the track at certain times, depending upon its schedule and the schedules of other trains that it may meet or pass along the way. An extra train, which carries white flags or lights on the engine as markers, may be given right to the track by train order. Otherwise it can use the track only in between regular trains.
The working timetable of a railroad may be considered as a framework for the traffic. The first class, or passenger, mail, and express trains, are the most important part of this framework. They have prior rights to the track, and of these first class trains those in one direction will have more right than those in the other.
Time freights are usually second class, and again those in the favored direction have more right than those in the other direction. Way freights and other less important trains are third class, and extras come below everything else.
Suppose we have two first class trains, No. 57 and 58. No. 58, going east, is superior by direction. No. 57 comes to an end of double track at A. The next siding is B, and 58 is scheduled to leave that siding at 10:18. If the engineer of 57 is sure that he can get to that siding with ten minutes to spare before 10:18, he leaves the double track and heads for siding B. Notice that it is not the actual position of No. 58 that is important, but the time it should be at B. That is why time is so important to railroad working, and also the main reason why trains can pass intermediate points late but never early. The only way a regular train can run early is to have its schedule annulled and run as an extra.
Suppose we go back to trains 57 and 58. If we're on 58 our schedule is superior both by direction and by the fact that our train is first class. If we get to siding B at 10:18 we can go right ahead whether or not No. 57 has showed up. We have the right of track over everything else, and it's not our responsibility to see where 57 is. That's up to the crew of 57, who must get out of our way, no matter where.
