ON THE BACK COVER:
Missouri Pacific's Steam to Diesel Era: 1945-1955 is an account of the decade in which the Missouri Pacific Railroad and its International-Great Northern and Gulf Coast Line subsidiaries made the transition from steam to internal combustion motive power. In a year-by-year review, author and noted steam locomotive authority Lloyd E. Stagner examines why and how the Missouri Pacific implemented "dieselization" along 9,871 miles of track once operated by the carrier across twelve midwestern and southern states. Included here are many photos of "MoPac" steam and diesel power in service during this dramatic period of change for America's railroad industry. Also included is roster information on each type of Missouri Pacific steam and diesel locomotive in service during this time. Railroad modelers will find this book useful, as will those seeking to know more about this part of MoPac history. The Missouri Pacific itself has been part of the Union Pacific Railroad system since 1982.
