INTRODUCTION
The Milwaukee Road, as a railroad company, operated one of the most comprehensive and complete passenger services to be found just about anywhere in the world. The following list does not begin to really describe the variety, but it does give a hint as to what the company did for and with the traveling public.
Overnight-Everynight Limiteds Transcontinental Streamliners
Domeliners with both Super Domes and the UP Dome Equipment
Secondary long distance trains including the transcontinental route
Mail and Express Trains
Corridor Services, i.e., Chicago-Milwaukee-Green Bay
Local Passenger trains
Commuter trains
And Last but not Least-the High Speed Hiawatha Fleet
Most railroad companies operated at least part of the types of services offered, but with the possible exception of the Canadian National, Canadian Pacific and the Southern Pacific; no other American railroad provided so many different types of train services. Railroads with extensive passenger services, such as the New York Central, the Pennsylvania, and the Illinois Central did indeed provide a variety of services, and high quality operations too, but did not really cover the same table menu of trains as the Milwaukee Road.
The objective of this book is to take a look at the Milwaukee Road with the Hiawatha Era in place from the mid-1940s through to 1971 and Amtrak, and actually beyond that date with the commuter train services. The Milwaukee Road was selected by Amtrak for the Chicago-Milwaukee corridor operations and the transcontinental services to the Pacific Northwest. The latter of course being between Chicago and the Twin Cities.
The company's motive power and passenger equipment is part of the book. The railroad designed some incredible passenger equipment and motive power designs, plus the color schemes were most attractive. We need to mention that the Milwaukee Road developed a superb passenger car truck during the 1930s that provided an incredible ride. This passenger car truck was and is so good, it's design and history should be reviewed by passenger car designers for trains for the future. (After all, whether we as Americans really know it yet-it is only railroad passenger service that can rescue us from the air and highway congestion and the air pollution problems caused by the extensive automobile travel. Too bad we do not yet have cooperative working efforts between the airlines and Amtrak. Well that's another story.)
The Milwaukee Road name eventually faded from passenger equipment and motive power after Amtrak and Metra (Chicago commuter services), as well as from the company's merger into the Soo Line and eventually the Canadian Pacific Railway System. However, as of this writing in 2002, one can still enjoy riding on the former Milwaukee Road trackage
on the commuter lines out of Chicago, and the Chicago-Milwaukee-Twin Cities segment of Amtrak's Empire Builder. Furthermore, there are plans in the Twin Cities Region to place a commuter service on the former Milwaukee Road trackage southeast of St. Paul. The implementation date has not yet been decided by the Minnesota Department of Transportation. So in a way, we can still enjoy riding the Milwaukee Road rails.
We hope that you, the reader, will find this book informative for research, history, modeling, color schemes, and even new creative ideas for passenger services in the future based on the well designed services and schedules of THE MILWAUKEE ROAD.
