COVER: Union Admiral David Farragut watches his flagship Hartford exchange volleys with the powerful Confederate ironclad Tennessee in the Battle of Mobile Bay, Aug. 5, 1864. While Farragut brought the Rebel ship to heel in barely an hour's time at Mobile Bay, the Union's Mississippi River forces had a more difficult encounter two years earlier with the little-known gunboat CSS Arkansas (Story, Page 20).
