Michigan-Ontario Iron Ore Railroads covers the wide variety of ore-hauling railroads in northern Wisconsin, Upper Michigan, and Ontario, primarily since the 1970s with some backtracking into the 1950s and 1960s for ore operations that disappeared during the mid-century. These railroad lines handled ore from the Gogebic, Menominee, and Marquette Ranges through the ports of Ashland and Marquette on Lake Superior; and Escanaba on Lake Michigan. Still other iron ore mining operations in Ontario sent ore through Little Current and Depot Harbor on Lake Huron, and Michipicoten on Lake Superior.
Several railroads, such as the Chicago & North Western, the Milwaukee Road, and the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic, have either been folded into mergers, or are out of the ore business. The Canadian National and Canadian Pacific operations on Lake Huron have ceased, as has the Algoma Central operation serving Lake Superior.
On the other hand, the Wisconsin Central took over the ore operations of the Chicago & North Western lines when the Union Pacific decided to withdraw from Upper Michigan. Furthermore, the Wisconsin Central has become extensively involved in all-rail movements as well as handling Minnesota taconite pellets to Escanaba. The Canadian National is now back in the ore business with its acquisition of the Wisconsin Central. Meanwhile, the Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad continues to serve the Marquette Range with its railroad and ore dock system.
The companion volume to this book, Minnesota-Ontario Iron Ore Railroads, describes the ore operations in northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Ontario.
Hopefully readers will find both books useful not only for historical purposes and providing an understanding of ore-handling logistics, but as an aid to modeling these diverse and colorful railroad systems.
