In Mexico, the network of narrow gauge systems was complex and varied. Here the author groups them under the major systems, the regional ones, the principal shortlines and industrials and ones in Yucatan. Some were 2-foot gauge, some 30 inches and some 3-foot.
Today you can still see steam in Mexico, though standard gauging and Dieselization have proceeded unmitigatingly.
Some of the motive power came from England and Germany, yet 90% of it was American made. In fact, the smallest 4-4-0 ever built by Baldwin is pictured in Mr. Best's exhaustive Roster.
The natural scenic assets of the area - its volcanoes and towering mountains - add to the photographic consist which is rich. Beside the fine pictures by the author, those of L. T. Haug, H. F. Stewart, Jim Shaughnessy and others bring up the level of excellence.
Narrow gauge steam in Mexico is very akin to that in the U.S. in early years, for mixed trains daily were commonplace, their mining roads similar to those in our West. There's a lot to intrigue you within these pages, "south of the border, down Mexico way."
