On Back Cover
The McDONNELL F-101 VOODOO was designed to escort American bombers into the Soviet Union, yet its most numerous variant became an interceptor guarding North America from other bombers. As a reconnaissance aircraft, the Voodoo went to war in Southeast Asia, flying the fastest combat missions ever flown.
ROBERT F DORR's volume on the Voodoo tells not merely of a warplane in the Century Series but, also, of men. The story begins in the crucible of Southeast Asia, where the men of the 20th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron test themselves against Hanoi's missiles, MiGs and Triple-A. Many of the men in the Voodoo story, like designer Edward M Flesh and test pilot Robert Little were interviewed specially for this history. Others, whose tale is told here, shaped the US Air Force of today.
The VOODOO story includes the Chinese Nationalist RF-101A flights over the mainland from Taiwan, and a first-hand account from the Canadian back-seater of an F-101B. Comprehensive appendices reveal all about an aircraft which was incredibly difficult to fly, yet loved by all who went aloft in the Voodoo in peace and war.
