OSCAR D. McCOLLUM JR.
THE AUTHOR organized the Marble Historical Society in 1977, and opened its museum in the old Marble High School building during the following year. He had been collecting information about the Marble area since 1941, when he was a student in a geology field camp in Crystal City. The beauty of the Marble area and the stimulus of the then operating marble quarry and mill started a life-long interest, which, with summer vacations in Marble every year, finally brought him back there to live after retirement. This field camp program of the Geology and Geography Department of the University of Kansas City - now part of the University of Missouri - was later interrupted by World War Il. His studies were continued after the war with graduate work in geography at George Washington University.
A career, starting as a cartographer with the Army Engineers and the U.S. Geological Survey, soon evolved into one in the intelligence field. Employment for 25 years with the Central Intelligence Agency, including four years in the Far East, culminated in an award of the Agency's Certificate of Distinction, "...for outstanding performance of duty."
Moving to Marble in 1976, Oscar soon became involved in local civic-andhistorical affairs. He served as a member of the Town of Marble's Board of Trustees for eight years and as mayor pro-tem. During this time, his efforts contributed to the acquisition by the town of the historic marble-mill site as a town park. The historical society prospered, and finally, the old high-school building was donated to the society by the Gunnison County school board. Oscar edited and published Marble Chips, the newsletter of the Marble Historical Society, for 15 years. This publication, containing historical vignettes, news of former residents and items of current interest, helped to bring together again many early residents of Marble. Two old-timers' reunions provided opportunities for nostalgic visits. In 1989 Oscar was awarded a Certificate of Commendation "For leadership in preserving and promoting Marble, Colorado, history," by the American Association of State and Local History.
