INTRODUCTION
In May of the year 1891, after the trolleys were running on the streets of Rochester, some Rochesterians started operating four wheel open street cars on the Grand View Beach Railroad from the village of Charlotte, New York, west along the sandy shore of Lake Ontario. Although the Manitou line was only eight miles in length, some thousands of people rode the ten bench open trolleys to cottages, hotels, etc. along the lake shore for some thirty years.
To preserve the trolley era in stories is the author's purpose in this series of books. "The Royal Blue Line," a book of the Rochester and Sodus Bay Railway, often called The Apple Blossom Line" was published in 1952. The Orange Blossom" or "Route of the Orange Limited," story of the Rochester and Eastern to Canandaigua and Geneva
I was published in 1953 and included 76 photos. The Rochester, Charlotte and Manitou Beach Railroad was a very different line because it was a short line, operated for its patrons only from spring to fall and deriving most of its revenue from summer time operations.
The fourth book will appeal to steam fans as well as others as this book will be about the railroad from Fonda to Johnstown and Gloversville which is still in operation. This company also operated a high speed electric interurban line from Gloversville to Schenectady, local street car service in Amsterdam and the twin "Glove Cities" of Johnstown and Gloversville with special service to Saratoga Springs during the racing season.
