Thousands of years ago, and probably quite by accident, our ancient ancestors learned that outside help could be used to an advantage in going from one place to another or in moving an object from place to place. Perhaps this "discovery" came when a man clung to a floating object as the current of a swift river carried him along. Or, perhaps he slid down an incline on a piece of bark to discover "transportation."
Of course no one really knows when the forerunner of modern day transportation became a reality, but we can assume that it began near the beginning of time.
Later, when a rolling circular object gave yet another of our ancestors the idea of a "wheel," another giant step was made toward the miracle of transport. While great strides have been made in modes of transport, and technological advances have made possible the incredible travels into space, the wheel remains the basic keystone of most types of transportation.
As time went on, power to propel the wheel changed from manpower to animal power, from animal power to wind power, from wind power to electric and steam power, until now the power of the atom is the power of the present and the future.
The rocket that propels a spaceship to the moon; the atom power that drives generators producing electricity; the jet engines that produce supersonic speeds in the air; and the huge diesel locomotives that speed
our trains from point to point all had their origin in the minds of men who were not content that transportation methods and modes had reached their full potential. Nor have we seen the last of innovations and new methods of transport. This industry is never-ending in its search for bigger and better ways to transport men and materials.
Millions of boys have watched speeding trains, have waved at the crew members and pledged that someday they too would be riding the rails-making those trains run. I was one of those fortunate boys who grew up to see his dream come true. It was a fascinating and wonderful life and in turn always a thrill to wave to the boys of another generation.
Long before I retired from railroading, and made working for the good of the United Transportation Union my avocation, I had started collecting curious facts about transportation. These pictures, clippings and hurriedly scribbled memos on the backs of envelopes now take up almost as much space at home as my hooks and papers on the history of unions.
Some of the items in this book have appeared in various newspapers and publications throughout the country. I hope you will enjoy browsing through these pages and learning as I have learned that every facet of transportation is extremely interesting.
