The information for this book was taken from the Maine Central Locomotive Register, dated 1923, along with additional material on locomotives that were purchased from that date until the end of steam operations.
Certain problems are encountered in compiling an absolutely accurate roster of any time period. Changes were made in the engines over the years, in most cases of a minor nature, but changing tenders, adding stokers, etc., made a difference in weight, length of wheel base, and even in the appearance. With this thought in mind, my apologies for variations in the following roster caused by changes over the years. The intention of this book is to give as complete a roster as possible during the last quarter century that steam power was used on the Maine Central Railroad.
This was an interesting time period with great contrast in motive power. The small older types that were used on branch lines because of weight limitations, or areas of low traffic volume, compared with the massive machines that were designed to drag tremendous trains, and the high speed passenger types that headed up the "name trains" of the day.
Compiling this information brought back many pleasant memories, thoughts of youthful experiences, train watching, visits to the roundhouse, and all the sights, sounds and smells that could only be found on the railroad.
