Steam and Diesel Locomotives in action around the world.
Railroading has a certain mystique that has captured the imagination of peoples throughout the world. The sound of the lonesome whistle at night, the sight of a mile-long freight train crawling across the countryside, the impression of sheer power manifested by a thundering locomotive . . . these are some examples that attract people to railroading.
If these images, which very nearly are in the realm of everyday experience, have enough magical appeal to captivate the public, what can we say about the excitement generated when railroading operates with a special impact-when it reaches a peak of engineering to meet the challenges of geography, weather, and tonnage?
To learn the answer to that question, the authors crossed six continents to discover and record those railroad locations and operations that present railroading in its most dramatic form. This objective led the authors to concentrate on heavy-duty mainline railroading. It also led the authors to concentrate on the disappearing steam locomotive, the most animated, most awe-inspiring, and most romantic of all of man's mechanical creations.
As the authors watched powerful steam locomotives struggling to lift freight and passengers to the top of the Andes, as they photographed an endless parade of freight trains rolling across the deserts of South Africa, and as they hiked trackside through the forests of Japan, they became so impressed by the drama unfolding before them that only one term could describe the railroading they experienced: The Big Show.
The Big Show is railroading at its best. The Big Show is an emotional as well as a visual experience. On the following pages, the authors share with you-in word and in picture-this extraordinary story of railroading around the world.
