LONDON'S LOST RAILWAYS Compared with the feverish activity on its railways in Victorian days, London nowadays has many miles of lines used only by freight-trains and lines which see passenger trains only in the peak hours. In this constructive analysis of railway transport in London, Charles Klapper, the distinguished writer and journalist on transport matters, looks at existing facilities and how they have been used in the past. He describes once-busy routes which have been abandoned completely - London Transport's Acton Town to South Acton branch; the neighbouring British Railways Hammersmith and Chiswick branch; the four miles of picturesque remains of the former London, Chatham and Dover company's access to Crystal Palace High Level. He records vanished train services and the lost causes of railway promotion; these include the Metropolitan District's Outer Circle scheme, Chalmers Kearney's tube proposals, and Colonel Holman Stephens's Southern Heights Light Railway.
