ON THE BACK COVER:
Logging Trucks, Tractors, and Crawlers describes the 200-year history of the machines and techniques used for logging in America. The book begins with the days when logs were harvested with the sweat of men and animals using axes, bucksaws, drag sleds, and arches. Water transport is also covered, from flumes and chutes to giant stream drives where millions of logs traveled out of the wilderness on the waterways of the country.
The first portable power source for logging was the steam engine. Steam-driven equipment used for logging ranged from portable steam engines that powered hoists and winches to Benjamin and Holt's steam-powered tractors and crawlers.
The piece of machinery that transformed logging, the crawler, is covered in detail, from the Lombard Steam Hauler to the powerful diesels used today, including Holt, Best, Caterpillar, Allis-Chalmers, International Harvester, and Cletrac crawlers.
Today's technological wonders that can harvest more lumber with less forest damage are also depicted, from skidders and crawlers to specialized buncher-fellers. With more than 150 photographs, Logging Trucks, Tractors, and Crawlers tells a fascinating technological history of an industry that changed the face of America.
