Logging Along the Denver & Rio Grande is the story of the lumbering industry that grew up along the route of the narrow gauge D&RG and Rio Grande Southern, from the Rio Grande River west across the southern flanks of the San Juan Mountains as far as Utah country; and of the narrow gauge railroads the industry utilized to bring logs to their mills, and deliver finished lumber to the main line railroad.
The first wave of lumbermen came with the building of the D&RG Railroad. Although railroads are thought of as made of iron or steel, early day railroads consumed great quantities of wood - in cross-ties, bridge timbers, depots and other structures, and even freight and passenger cars. The second, longer lasting, wave of lumbermen came after the railroad was established, to exploit timber made available by the new avenue of transportation to supply the lumber needs of growing cities in Colorado and distant markets.
