DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
The decade of the 1950s was perhaps the most dynamic period in airliner development. While today's aircraft manufacturers boast of better fuel economy, lower emissions and increased seat capacity all viable goals the fifties were a time of monumental and fundamental change. Central to this transformation was the introduction of the turbine power plant. The long-dominant piston-powered airliners had just about reached their developmental zenith while turbine transport was still in its infancy and many wondered whether or not it even had a place in the industry. Enter the Lockheed Model 188 Electra.
The Electra story is one of both triumph and tragedy. Tested beyond all current industry standards, it suffered a rapid succession of crashes soon after its debut that left 188 operators nervous and scared the traveling public. These accidents two saw the Electra break up in the air almost doomed it to failure just as the type was hitting its stride. From this adversity however, came an investigation unparalleled in the industry. The problem was identified and corrected. Finally, the Electra could settle down and provide the service for which it was intended. Several of the 170 aircraft built are still flying today, more than 40 years after first taking to the skies.
Volume Five of the Great Airliners Series is a comprehensive look at this unique airliner. It follows the Electra's history from its preliminary concept through development and its initial flight. Initial airline operations are examined in detail, in addition to those of subsequent carriers. A chapter is devoted to early accident investigations and how Lockheed doggedly worked through the problem to come up with a fix that allowed the Electra to enjoy a long and , prosperous career. Another study reviews the adaptability of the original design into cargo variants, submarine hunters, research platforms and fire bombers. Hull losses are individually reviewed. Finally, a production list provides the disposition of each aircraft built.
Supplemented by 300 pictures, charts and diagrams, this volume provides a fascinating look at one of America's truly great airliners.
