The Lives of James John Hagerman
by John J. Lipsey
James John Hagerman is Colorado's neglected tycoon. You won't find even his name in a current school history of Colorado, or mention of the 238-mile railroad he built, the first standard-gauge over the Colorado Rockies. A great many Coloradans have never heard of him at all. This ought not to be so, for Hagerman had a large part in making Colorado history.
He built the Colorado Midland Railway despite violent opposition from existing railroads; he was active in Leadville mining; was president of the Isabella Mining Company and the Zenobia Mining and Milling Company at Cripple Creek ; owned much of the famous Mollie Gibson Mine at Aspen, from which he made millions and was part owner and developer of coal lands near Aspen and Glenwocd Springs. He was a benefactor of Colorado College at Colorado Springs, and the college's Hagerman Hall was named for him.
His honesty and good sense were so evident to his contemporaries that they asked him to settle the great Cripple Creek strike of 1894, and it was due to his efforts that for nine years afterward there was labor peace in the Cripple Creek district.
Compared to Evans, Moffat, Palmer, Jackson and other tycoons, Hagerman was a late corner to Colorado, but he never bowed down to them. In fact, in some engagements, he beat the pants off them. He was different from these men in two other respects; most of them came to Colorado to make a fortune ; Hagerman was already a millionaire when he got here and he invested his wealth in the State. And, unlike the others, he was a TB who had come to the State intending to retire.
Hagerman's career was not confined to Colorado. He made his first fortune in developing great iron deposits in Michigan and as an ironmaster in Milwaukee. He lost his last great fortune (gained from Colorado silver) while developing the Pecos River Valley in New Mexico as an irrigated agricultural district. The town of Hagerman, New Mexico is named for him.
Such a man should not be forgotten. His achievements for Colorado's and New Mexico's benefit (as well as for his own) should be recorded. His origin, his motives, methods, thoughts, aims, his triumphs, his disappointments and disasters can be examined with profit and entertainment.
What is written in The Lives of James John Hagerman is such an examination and record.
