Those of us who regret the passing of the Age of Steam will take heart at the durable nature of some of the world's miniature railways. In the United States particularly, the small steam locomotives are often our only reminder that once their big prototypes were a commonplace on the railroads of the nation. In many foreign lands, the miniature steam locomotive has had a better chance of survival; but they disappear one by one until only a few are left, preserved in the case of Britain by Railway Societies and others. These reawaken our interest in the part the steam engine once played in the world of commerce and in our daily lives.
Going on a train journey was always an adventure. And in the world today there are still a few miniature railways, whether they be common carriers, private lines or recreational projects, where the more leisurely pleasures of going on a train journey can still be experienced.
In the belief that there must be many people who would like to share with me over half a century of travel, both actual and armchair, on some of these outstanding miniature railways of the world, I have set down in the following pages the story of the roads themselves and the men who had much to do with them.
Frederic SHAW has achieved an entirely new approach to the subject of railroading. Ile presents these tiny railway lines with explanations for their being and fine descriptions of their locale.
The reader necessarily feels himself a passenger, and in his mind can roll off such a tongue twister as Aberffrwd with the ease of a constant traveler on the Vale of Rheidol Railway of Wales. Adventurous readers will delight in the stories of the Otavi Railway in Africa, of the Darjeeling- Himalayan Railway in India, and of the Shanghai - Woosung Railway which the Chinese called their "Steamboat on Shore".
The author has such affection for the little railways and such great esteem for their builders, that he has included, of course, passages of tribute to the pioneers of this field. The reader with nostalgic leanings will appreciate his chapter about the Cagney brothers. Many of the early Cagney engines are in use today in amusement parks throughout the country.
Little Railways of the World also offers generous tidbits of information for model fanciers, along with fine equipment drawings. In 'Workshop for Rail Fans" it is shown how a railroad fiend can methodically become more so by "taking the course".
Primarily, the book shows that the little railways, though of endearing site, have the same struggle for existence as did their larger prototypes. But as survivors of the age of steam they are available for our enjoyment in the here and now.
