LETTER OF TRANSMITTAL.
DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE AND LABOR, BUREAU OF NAVIGATION, Washington, D. C., September 16, 1909.
SIR: In compliance with the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 5, 1884, establishing the Bureau of Navigation, and directing the Commissioner of Navigation to "annually prepare and publish a list of vessels of the United States belonging to the commercial marine, specifying the official number, signal letters, name, rig, tonnage, home port, and place and date of building of every vessel, distinguishing in such list sailing vessels from such as may be propelled by steam or other motive power," the forty-first annual list of such vessels is herewith submitted, it being the twenty-sixth annual list prepared by the Bureau of Navigation, and bringing the record of the merchant vessels of the United States down to June 30, 1909.
This volume contains the names of vessels, classed as follows:
Sailing vessels. (Part I.)
Steam vessels. (Part II.)
Unrigged vessels. (Part III.)
Loss of American vessels. (Part IV.)
Government vessels: Vessels belonging to the Navy; the Quartermaster's Department, United States Army; the Engineer Department, United States Army; the Ordnance Department, United States Army; the Revenue-Cutter Service, the Light-House Establishment, the Coast and Geodetic Survey, the Bureau of Fisheries, the Public Health and Marine-Hospital Service, the Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization, the Reclamation Service, and the Isthmian Canal Commission. (Part V.)
The information relating to merchant vessels is arranged as follows:
1. Official number of the vessel.7. Service, of steam vessels.
2. Signal letters.8. Crew, excluding master.
3. Rig.9. Indicated horsepower.
4. Name.10. Year of building.
5. Tonnage (gross and net).11. Place of building.
6. Register dimensions 12. Home port                                                          (length, breadth, and depth) (where permanent document issues)
Signal letters are assigned to seagoing vessels of the United States, and, upon application made through a collector of customs, they will be granted to yachts, and, in particular cases, to other vessels, if necessary. Such letters are requisite in order to afford the means of recognition by signals at sea.
A supplement to this volume, being Part VI, has been prepared, designed especially for the use of signal stations and of masters of seagoing vessels classed as follows and having distinguishing signal letters:
Merchant vessels of the United States, yachts, vessels belonging to the Navy; the Quartermaster's Department and Engineer Department, United States Army; the Revenue-Cutter Service, the Light-House Establishment, the Coast and Geodetic Survey, the Bureau of Fisheries, and the Isthmian Canal Commission.
