A SELECT LOOK AT LOCATIONS & FACILITIES in NEW YORK HARBOR REGION

Most pages have one photo with a description.

We begin our journey at the coal piers of Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Perth Amboy was an extremely important port for the shipment of coal. Even before the turn of the Twentieth century, the Lehigh Valley Railroad was transporting and selling coal to many different locations in New England. Sea-going tugboats were used to haul groups of schooner barges northward. These barges were loaded using a gravity feed method. The Lehigh Valley Railroad needed a more efficient method of coal transfer - the result is the McMyler coal dumper shown above, which could empty a loaded hopper car in seconds.
