INTRODUCTION
There is neither road nor footpath down the whole length of Manifold Valley, though these occur here and there. But the little railway threads its inmost recesses in a delightfully casual way, playing hide and seek with the cliffs and the waters, and the cars are built to make the best of the views in all directions.
- Thomas L. Tudor The High Peak to Sherwood 1926
This book is the story in words and pictures of that little railway of the Manifold Valley. It is a railway which I never knew personally, being of a different generation. Indeed, more than 45 years have passed since the last engine steamed its unhurried way down the line - but its memory stubbornly refuses to fade. Each year countless thousands still thread those inmost recesses, only this time on foot, for a footpath now plays hide-and-seek with the cliffs and the waters, and the casual little trains run only in the imagination.
