INTRODUCTION.
The Manifold Valley Light Railway was one of the earliest narrow gauge lines built as a result of the Light Railways Act of 1896. By pure chance, it became a British copy of the Barsi Light Railway, that extremely successful Indian line using locomotives and rolling stock constructed to "Calthrop's Patent."
It was one of the four British lines built to the 2 ft. 6 inch gauge, the others being the St. Austell & Pentewan, the Chattenden & Upnor, and the Welshpool & Llanfair. In addition, the stock of the 2 ft. 3 inch gauge Campbeltown and Macrihanish Railway was built to permit easy conversion to the 2 ft. 6 inch gauge, should this prove necessary.
Great hopes, unfortunately never realised, were entertained by the promotors, and the line was a financial disaster; the layout in a deep narrow valley, with the centres of trade and population on the uplands, was not conducive to the development of traffic. Nothing came of the proposed extension to Buxton, which might have created an increased revenue by directly serving a more populous district; and the increased use of buses and lorries made the ultimate fate of the Manifold doubly sure.
