ON THE INSIDE COVER:                                                                                                                                                                         BRITISH MINING                                                                                                                                 THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE NORTHERN MINE RESEARCH SOCIETY
British Mining Memoirs and Monographs are vehicles for the publication of members' researches into Britain's historic extractive industries. First issued in 1976 as a sequentially numbered series, the title was coined from Robert Hunt's great dissertation on metalliferous mining in the United Kingdom, first published in 1884 and reissued in 1887. Hunt (1807 - 1887) held the post of Keeper of Mining Records for 37 years from 1845; he was a lecturer in mechanical science at the Royal School of Mines and, in addition to his work on the annual Mineral Statistics of Great Britain, also edited Ures Dictionary of Arts Manufactures and Mines. The latter was an encyclopedia of 19th century technology.
The society's Memoirs contain short papers on a wide range of historic mining topics and are usually published annually. On the other hand, Monographs are complete entities on specific mines or mining fields and are written by members with special knowledge of such locations. Both Memoirs and Monographs are uniform in style and format, the latter carrying an International Standard Book Number. British Mining is issued to members as an integral part of their annual subscription.
THE SOCIETY was formed in 1960 as the Northern Cavern and Mine Research Society, its activities centred upon the study of mines, mining and speleology in northern England. Subsequently, with an expanding national membership, a less parochial outlook emerged so that now `northern' applies more to the society's administrative base than the areas under study. Moreover, as speleological activities declined, the word `cavern' was deleted from the society's title in 1975. In 1985, the society became a registered charity and is a founder member of the National Association of Mining History Organisations (N.A.M.H.O.)
