The Lackawanna Railroad proudly proclaimed itself "the most highly developed railroad in America" and there were few other roads who would attempt to argue the claim. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western was not a big road by any means: with a grand total of 998 miles of track, it was surpassed in mileage and physical size by many other companies. But the Lackawanna always had a sense of pride in being the best in all respects, a pride that even the 1960 merger with the Erie and the subsequent Conrail takeover in 1976 failed to erase completely.
In this volume, we are going to take a look at the Lackawanna in the period from 1947 to 1952. This was a transitional period that saw the change from steam to diesel. By 1948 the brightly painted diesel-electric locomotives were at the head-end of the crack passenger trains making their way between Hoboken and Buffalo as well as on many through freights. The yards and shops at Scranton told the sad story for the steam enthusiast as the dead line of steam locomotives seemed to grow by the day. It was also the last days of the coal trains, milk trains, branch line locals and a whole way that seemed much more subdued and picturesque.
It was the end of one era and the beginning of the final chapter of Lackawanna History, the dieselized and streamlined era that would finally end in 1960 with the merger of the DL&W and its longtime rival, the Erie Railroad. The Erie-Lackawanna merger officially ended the corporate existence of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, but no one can really erase an institution of such long duration and revered memory. Here is a look at the Lackawanna so many of us knew in that pivotal postwar period; we have chosen a selection of photographs that we hope will convey to you some of the essence of the LACKAWANNA HERITAGE.
