On the Back Cover
Over 30 years have passed since British Railways ran their last passenger train on the branch from Keighley, through the Brontes' village of Haworth to Oxenhope, in West Yorkshire. In those intervening years, the line up the Worth Valley has become one of Britain's most popular preserved railways.
Since the first locomotive arrived at the Haworth headquarters of the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway Preservation Society in 1965, the line has acquired the services of a wealth of both steam and diesel motive power. The locomotives based on the Worth Valley range from diminutive machines designed for shunting or industrial duties to those which spent their careers in the first rank of goods and passenger duties on Britain's main lines.
This book charts the pre-preservation careers of the locomotives which are based on the KWVR today. In over 100 photographs, aspects of the working lives of the machines which make up the Worth Valley's varied fleet are portrayed, carrying out their designated duties, throughout Britain and, in the case of two locomotives, on the Continent.
