Cover photo, This westbound M-K-T freight train was photographed as it was coming off the CB&Q double-track mainline at Machens, MO (MP 26.9), o the Katy's own tracks north of St. Louis, MO, circa 1939. Note that 2-8-2 Mikado No. 846 is equipped with a temporary wooden spoke pilot, in place of its more fa- miliar slotted steel Katy-style pilot. This was the view from the CB&Q's interlocking tower at Machens.
