Fresh from the Civil War, young General William J. Palmer joined the Kansas Pacific Railroad and helped push its rails across the prairies in quest of a transcontinental route. The Kansas Pacific never built beyond Denver, but its trains brought to the West the cowboys, gamblers and gunslingers who lived by the law of the six-shooter. Later traffic settled down to the legendary longhorn steers which followed the famous Chisholm and Ellsworth Trails from Texas to the Kansas Pacific railhead.
Before the Kansas Pacific reached Denver in 1870, Palmer dreamed of a railroad all the way to Mexico City. On July 29, 1871, his own narrow gauge Denver & Rio Grande Railroad broke ground and headed south. Thwarted from reaching the final goal of Mexico City by a battle with the Santa Fe for rights over Raton Pass, the D&RG turned back into the hills and laced the Rocky Mountains with its tracks.
Kansas West is a scholarly and thoroughly researched history of two of America's railroads during the construction era. Integrated into the text is a gallery of superb historical photographs, maps and illustrations bringing back the days when tiny coal - burning steam locomotives whistled their way through mile-deep Colorado canyons or charged through Wild West towns on the Kansas frontier.
This bit of nostalgic Americana will gladden the heart of every rail buff, Western devotee, and the casual reader can't help but delight in Anderson's casual commentary and savor the photographs of smoky engines and creaking day coaches.
