The Kansas City Southern
Route of the Southern Belle
By Terry Lynch and W.D. Caileff Jr.
One of the nation's unique railroads, the independently owned Kansas City Southern is an anomaly, by today's standards, surrounded as it is by such corporate giants as the Burlington Northern, Union Pacific-Missouri Pacific, SP and Santa Fe.
Running nearly due south for almost 900 miles, the Kansas City Southern, sometimes affectionately dubbed the "Haywire" line because of the unusual features found on some of its early steam motive power, links the heartland of America with the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana, providing service to Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas.
Originally conceived and built by a visionary named Arthur Stilwell in the last decade of the nineteenth century, the KCS was completed to Port Arthur, Texas (named for Stilwell) in 1897. Shortly thereafter, the new line fell on hard times and Stilwell was forced out of his ownership position. Undaunted by this setback, however, the energetic entrepreneur proceeded to build a new line, the Kansas City, Mexico & Orient.
Ever alert to the needs of the region it served, the Kansas City Southern found a real niche for itself as a commercial carrier when oil was discovered in Texas. Texas oil was hauled north, while grain from the heartland headed south.
In 1937, ten new super powerful 2-10-4s were added to the railroad's fleet, further strengthening an already strong position as a first class commercial carrier. During the 1970s, the KCS developed a working arrangement with the Burlington Northern to haul Wyoming coal to the midwest and Southland.
Long admired by railroaders for the no nonsense, businesslike approach to its motive power, the KCS has developed a workhorse reputation for moving a lot of freight. Distinctive coloring was and still is a trademark of this unique railroad. Jet black passenger cars with red and yellow trim have now given way to all white diesels trimmed in red and yellow.
Perhaps more than any other operation in the U.S. today, the KCS epitomizes the American railroad story. Featuring over 300 photos, The Kansas City Southern: Route of the Southern Belle will be a welcome addition to any railfan's library.
