Preface
This volume is devoted almost exclusively to reports on research work carried out during 1907-1908 by holders of Carnegie Research Scholarships. Some years ago Mr. Andrew Carnegie, Past-President, presented to the Iron and Steel Institute funds for the purpose of founding Research Scholarships to be awarded annually, irrespective of sex or nationality, to
candidates under thirty-five years of age.The object of
this scheme of Scholarships is not to facilitate ordinary collegiate studies, but to enable students who have passed through a college curriculum, or have been trained in industrial establishments, to conduct researches in the metallurgy of iron and steel, with the view of aiding its advance or its application to industry.
The results of the researches are presented to the Iron and Steel Institute at the Annual General Meeting of members ; and, in order to prevent the ordinary volume of proceedings becoming too unwieldy, it has been decided that the Carnegie Research Memoirs shall be published in a supplementary volume.
The research memoirs in this volume are eight in number. For the report on experimental researches on the cooling power of liquids, on quenching velocities, and on the constituents troostite and austenite, Dr. Carl Benedicks (Upsala, Sweden) received the Carnegie Gold Medal. The reports by Mr. E. Hess (New York), by Dr. J. Newton Friend (Milden hall, Suffolk), by Mr. D. M. Levy (University of Birmingham), by Mr. Albert Hiorth (Christiania), by Mr. B. Saklatwalla (Charlottenburg), by Mr. C. A. Edwards (Victoria University, Manchester), and by Mr. H. C. Boynton (Trenton, New Jersey) were considered by the Council to be of sufficient merit to justify their publication in full.
In this volume will also be found a reprint of a rare and interesting essay on the origin of the discovery of pig boiling, written in 1864 by Joseph Hall of Tipton.
