Joseph Locke, the most zealous, competent and efficient figure of the Railway Revolution, was not only a civil and mechanical engineer of the first flight, but a brilliant planner and administrator who understood precisely the concepts we now call specification and communication. He engineered the first trunk line in Britain, completed the London and Southampton Railway and the Manchester and Sheffield line. then drove his rails westwards to Exeter and northwards over Shap Fell and Beattock to Glasgow and Edinburgh, Perth and Aberdeen. Better than anyone, he could claim to be the principal architect of Britain's developing railway system.
Abroad he engineered not only the first trunk line in France, but also the first railways in Spain and Holland. In the field of mechanical engineering he designed the bull-head rail, made new developments in the design of locomotives and founded the railway towns of Crewe and Sotteville, near Rouen.
Until recently Locke has been a neglected figure ; the extraordinary efficiency and economy of his works, with their avoidance of expensive tunnels and earthworks and acceptance of gradients based on a confidence in the growing power of the locomotive, concealed their true greatness, while his quarrel with his mentor, George Stephenson, did not help his popularity.
This book tells for the first time the story of this remarkable engineer, his rise to fame and fortune, his mastery of organization and planning, his differences with Stephenson, his close family life, his patronage of his nephew Alfred Austin (later Poet Laureate) and finally, his death in the moorlands of Scotland, the place he loved best and the scene of his greatest achievement.
