THE DIVISION OF THE BOOK
The book has been divided into sections which correspond with the survey map of the museum area.
In order to simplify things, the more important parts of the exhibitions have been divided into sub-sections, which in their turn have been arranged in alphabetical order.
There then follows a detailed description of the most interesting items within each section.
THE RAILWAY MUSEUM
The Railway Museum in Hamar is the oldest in Scandinavia and it is also the oldest technical museum in Norway.
It was founded in 1896 and the first items were exhibited in a room in Hamar Station. However, in 1912 the room was needed for other purposes and the museum exhibits were put in storage.
The museum remained dormant until 1926, when it was reopened at Diesen, an old farm, outside Hamar, belonging to the railways.
The location offered no possibilities for extension, however, though the museum was steadily growing.
In 1946, when the museum celebrated its 50th anniversary the collections were taken over by Norwegian State Railways, and the task of finding a better site for the museum was commenced.
Storhamar was chosen, and in 1956 the new museum installations were officially opened.
