I was born at Cat's Cove, Conception Bay (now known as Conception Harbour) on February 6, 1897. I must confess to having only a child's vague and scattered recollections of that place. Our home was located near St. John's (Singens) Road and my earliest memory is of falling in a roadside ditch on the way back from a neighbour's house. It was a Sunday afternoon and I was dressed in my best clothes. Mother came to my rescue and consoled me about the mess I had made. I can also recollect going down Singens Road to see where my brothers and sister went to school. When I came to what was known as the Crossroads I was too scared to proceed further and retreated homeward. I was to have every opportunity to overcome this fear of travel in later years.
My father was Constable William Chafe of the Newfoundland Constabulary, originally a native of Petty Harbour. In the early summer of 1901 he was transferred from Cat's Cove to St. Mary's, St. Mary's Bay, and my most vivid boyhood memories are of my years in that place. The trip to St. Mary's also holds a special significance for me in that it provided my introduction to railway travel. We went to join the train at Avondale in a procession of three horse carriages containing my parents, our furnishings, my older brothers Jim and Jack, my sister Ann, myself, and my brother Leo, the baby of the family. Jim and Jack had to be warned off the track at Avondale station, my mother worrying that they could be killed by a train at any time during their play. We caught the train to Brigus Junction to connect with the Placentia train. The shunting of the engines at the platform frightened me and 1 held my father's hand for dear life and bawled for all I was worth.
