Volume I of The Iron Sherpa explored in depth the history of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and its extraordinary survival into the 21st century. Volume 2 completes this highly acclaimed definitive history by examining in detail the 55mile route from New Jalpaiguri, basking in the torrid heat of the plains, to Darjeeling, nearly 7,000 feet higher and lying in the shadow of Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world. It is a journey that passes through the heart of the second city of Bengal, burrows deep into dense forests, carves its way through village bazaars, and hangs on the edge of precipices, as the train loops and zigzags its improbable way up the mountains.
