IRON HORSE — Steam Trains of the World is a celebration of the coming, the growth and the modern existence of steam locomotion throughout the world.
A team of professional photographers and steam enthusiasts traveled for over five years around the world taking pictures exclusively for this book. More than three-quarters of the pictures have never been seen before. In addition, the British steam collector, photographer and archivist, Colin Garratt, provided previouslyunpublished pictures and also went specially to the north of China, close to the border with Russia, to bring back photographs that illustrate, further, the state of the art today.
IRONHORSE is therefore a unique exploration of an era that is far from dying.
Steam locomotion, when it first evolved in the early 1800s, did not simply occupy a period of history, it dominated the world as perhaps the single most significant development of the industrial era. Within the short space of thirty years in England, a railway network spread across the entire country like a spider's industrious web, bringing transportation to a country which had previously been a sleepy, localized, farming community.
With the innovation of men such as James Watt, Trevithick and George Stephenson, a few desultory puffs of steam grew into the magnificence of engines capable of rapid speed and huge hauling capacity, serving the mining industries and then the passenger routes.
In the new lands of America, vast distances with difficult terrain and hazardous conditions had to be covered in order that the conquering. "white man" could make some impression on a land he could not begin to explore without the help of the Ironhorse.
Steam traction was rapidly taken up throughout the rest of Europe as nations converged, changed and developed, during this time of change before the First World War. India derived its railway growth from the British Empire and still runs steam engines today. Africa blossomed from its natural resources of diamonds and gold through the giant efforts of men like Cecil Rhodes and track, was laid through all conditions — jungle, rapids, wild lions, regardless of opposition.
IRONHORSE brings the stories, the adventures and the political machinations of a time of unprecedented growth, but it also brings, as much the steam that lives today. Throughout West and East Europe, the British Isles, America, Canada, India, China, the Ocean Islands, the Middle East, Africa, Australia and South America, the very best is captured in pictures and words that form a classic example of a phenomenon that refuses to die.
