When you became interested in scale model railroading you became one of a group of some 190,000 persons, of whom 40 per cent are professional men or owners of businesses. About 20 per cent are teen-age students. The one thing we all have in common is the desire to create a convincing impression of real railroad activity in a small space.
Many people realize the distinction between toy trains and scale models but few are aware that the significant difference is more than visual. What we do with the hobby is most important.
We go about model railroading in many ways. Here is a list of some of the opportunities, but please keep in mind that no one does them all:
Create one or several realistic scenes with a railroady atmosphere.
Create a track system like that of a real railroad with terminals, main line yards, and with spurs serving various industries.
Solve operational problems such as switching an assortment of cars to their proper tracks in the fewest moves possible.
Run trains as smoothly as possible for greater realism. For some, the electrical control circuits that make this possible are a fascination.
Collect a group of locomotives or cars representing a theme such as all the trains that ran in the old home town.
Make models look more lifelike by painting rusty and dusty veils of color over them for weathered or aged effects.
Arrange lighting and backgrounds.
Not all model railroaders build things, since you can get almost anything you need ready to use. However, working with hands and tools is a principal satisfaction for many of us model railroaders.
Another point I should make is that you don't finish a model railroad any more than you finish fishing, golfing, or reading the sports page. The fun of model railroading is in the doing, and the man who rushes to complete a railroad layout may be disappointed. As you gain experience you'll find it is fun to go back and revise some of your earlier work.
