Foreword
INTERURBANS, Special 15, "Interurbana of Utah," is the largest of our publications to date. Even so, it was necessary to cut out many photos and other material to keep within bounds. This bounty of excellent data should be credited to the one man who, down through the years, acted to conserve valuable material which otherwise would be lost forever: Mr. Fred Fellow. You will encounter the initials "FF^ frequently in the following pages; let each be a testimonial to his energies and foresight.
Utah's five interurban companies may be likened to an inverted cross, with Salt Lake City the intersecting point. To the north went The Bamberger Railroad to Ogden, where it connected with the Utah Idaho Central Railroad which continued northward to Preston, Idaho. South from Zion went the Salt Lake & Utah Railroad to Payson. These were the "Big Three" and several efforts were made (the first as early as 1914) to merge them into one great system. East from Salt Lake City went the Emigration Canyon Railroad---which quit before the Salt Lake, Garfield & Western (westward to the Lake) became an interurban. Thus, at any one given time, there were but four operating interurban companies in Utah.
Space did not permit us to take up the suburban lines of the Salt Lake City local streetcar company, or to dwell on the very large and impressive electrified railways operated by the Kenecott Copper Company at its pits near Bingham.
"Interurbans of Utah" takes up each interurban company in the order it began operating with electricity. A short section on the impressive Salt Lake Terminal 1s inserted in its proper place.
The last UIC passenger train passes through Logan on the cold night of February 15, 1947.
Now, a word or two regarding other INTERURBANS Specials. To complete the sad story related in Special 14, the last car of the Twin City Rapid Transit Company operated on June 18, 1954. The Twin Towns are now given over to GM diesel buses. From Salt Lake we will next jump briefly back to Southern California and the Pacific Electric's local lines in Orange Empre cities---and then on to mystical, magical New Orleans, where with the expert guidance of Mr. E. Harper Charleton, we will witness the growth and decline of the electric railways of the Crescent City. Then back to Los Angeles for the "Los Angeles-Pacific" history and finally to the fabled mid-mest line, "Arkansas Valley Interurban."
Please note: Specials 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9 and Supplement 1 to the P.E. Roster are now out of print. Certain 1946-48 monthly issues are also out of print, be we can fill with certain 1945 issues, hence are still showing the old INTERURBA.JS monthlies on the
